7th January 2005 : Mirrored Detail
I visited Martin Mere today along with my friend Richard for a day shooting with Photographer Ben Hall.
I enjoyed the day even though the light was poor, and ended up with a few shots.
I was pleased with the way a couple of the shots looked after some abstractive processing.
This shot is an example of that, funny how it was the first idea that popped into my head when I viewed it on the laptop.

Wonderful.

There have been a lot of reflection shots on blogs recently, but this has a fresh approach which makes it stand out from the rest.
Kevin on 8th January 2006 @ 2:30pm
very nicely done. I really like the PP work you've done here and the density it gives to the image. It's very "fairy tale" which I like very much.
Dan :: genestho.ca on 8th January 2006 @ 2:52pm
Very interesting composition. I like the reflection
Chris on 8th January 2006 @ 5:29pm
Wonderful high key. The reflection is amazing
roberman on 8th January 2006 @ 10:15pm
Not to anthropomorphise, but that bird looks almost meditative.
Tim on 9th January 2006 @ 5:27am
I like this shot, nice idea with the processing.
SteveO on 9th January 2006 @ 11:30am
Um, I do love the reflection don't get me wrong. It is very crisp but is it just my monitor or is the swans back burnt out? The reflection really is dreamy though.
tobias on 9th January 2006 @ 1:30pm
hehe yes tobias, its supposed to be ;) or that was the idea.
Paul on 9th January 2006 @ 3:40pm
Even the swan has a dreamy look on its face...or was that corrected in PS too? :) Great image!
Tim on 10th January 2006 @ 1:49am
Well you did and excellent pp. Funny that the duck (or swan?)seems to be extremelly sad isn't it?. Love the reflections too.
Adriana on 10th January 2006 @ 9:16am
Great processing, love the composition, nice treatment for a photo taken on another miserable day :)

absolutely lovely!

I'm a huge fan of this kind of shots where the white background of the photo dissolve with the white template theme. It's an amazing photo. This is today's photo of the day in The Invisible Man! : )
nuno f on 11th January 2006 @ 1:15am
brilliant shot, great light. i like it very much!
Peter on 11th January 2006 @ 2:09pm
Im not so sure that I like this shot so much. Its a little too over exposed for me. I think I would prefer to see the line of the swan's back, instead of it becoming part of the white background.
Phil on 16th January 2006 @ 5:41am
love it paul. i like how you added contrast to the real world, and kept the reflection looking more realistic. nice!
zac on 17th January 2006 @ 6:06am
Ah now this is an excellent reflection. And the way the legs disappear makes it for me.
ROB on 18th January 2006 @ 8:40am
Love it

Great shot and inspired processing. I went to Martin Mere many times as a kid and can fondly remember chasing geese etc down the paths with my red wellies on (naughty boy). Had totally forgotten the place existed as I've moved away from the NW. I do pop back now and again though and your shot has inspired me to pay it a visit. Thanks.

at first i didnt like it at all, interesting but i kinda just though 'blown out' off the bat, where it borderlines style and a screw up. After just looking at it I do like it more, it's subtle in it's ways but I dig it. I'd love to see a black and white version with a little more contrast though...I think that would be stellar

beautiufl shot..i like the mirror reflection in the water....the white background and water blend so well..beautiful shot:-)
pixibition on 24th January 2006 @ 4:57pm
Another quality idea put to good use, Paul. Definitely looks better in white. Wicked.
ChrisK on 25th January 2006 @ 2:27pm
Good shot and a great idea for processing. I really like it. On the white background it just jumps off the screen.
Mark [londonrubbish] on 27th January 2006 @ 1:31am

Did we loose you, Paul?
We miss your captures and are hoping that you will be back soon!
Cy on 8th February 2006 @ 5:40pm
Fantastic blown-out highlights; it really works and makes this image seem almost abstract. Lovely.
Alastair on 11th March 2006 @ 4:53pm
Love the high contrast in this, and how the goose fades into the background...nicely captured.
Meredith on 22nd March 2006 @ 6:21pm
stunning, you were there are perfect moment it looks like.

It's often useful and necessary to intentionally lose detail in order to achieve a desired artistic effect. At least from your commentary that's what I gathered was your intent. Bravo for having the guts to knowingly risk the fury of the purists out there who might criticize the intentional, large-scale blowout here.
I'm totally with you in going for the abstract and even painterly quality with this image. But I believe the illusion and feeling you are after could have been more convincing after a wholesale spotting of the distracting, high-key, debris floating within the bounds of the reflection. What abstraction or painterly image would intentionally include such jarring and reality-enforcing distractions?
I'd also build on your suggestion to view the image with the white background by actually increasing the white space around the image itself, rather than the tight crop you currently have. More surrounding white space would certainly increase the drama.
Yes, it's true that this is all subjective judgment on my part, but so are all the comments on this and every blog. Of course, it's possible that you'll disagree entirely and, perhaps, you don't welcome such detailed or specific suggestions about your images. That's understandable and totally fair and, if so, I completely apologize for my presumption.
But, at least, these suggestions are very specific, well considered, and meant to be nothing other than constructive. I hope you find them to be in that spirit and, even better, to actually be helpful.
Bob on 17th April 2006 @ 11:25am
Way cool.
Smoove D on 10th June 2006 @ 8:27pm
