8th August 2005 : Ascent
Pretty weird how this one turned out, this was shot inside the Ossuaire memorial monument at Douaumont near Verdun....one of the "while passing visits"....flash off, ISO up, lets see how it comes out shots.
Im not going to into what happened at Verdun, except for the fact there was an incredible loss of life during the WW1 campaign. Various estimates between 750,000 and 1.2 million fell at Verdun alone......

Wow hah this is really cool. I especially like the stairs on the sides.

this reminds me of Dali's work - the one with the stairs... I cant remember what its called. Great surreal view!

excellent perspective, and I think that this has come out really well considering how dark it must have been in there. That shaft of light shining through the doors looks superb.

Ascent - but (metaphorically) to what... To a huge death count? To WW2? Great shot, especially the perspective.

Interesting shot - works well given the context. It really does look surreal! I love the way you are forced to really look at the image to work it out - the eye is led around the frame from the center to the stairs. Good stuff.

Great shot. Apart from the area in the center, it looks more like a 3D render rather than a photograph.

Escher-esque! Very nice perspective and I love how each step kinda lights up.
Arjan on 8th August 2005 @ 3:38pm
what exactly are we looking out here?
aashish on 9th August 2005 @ 7:43am
Wonderful innovative angle Paul - love the POV. The solid shaft of light coming through the door adds another dimension to this shot too. (and I dont mean in a twilight-zone kind of way)

aashish : You looking down from half way up the Ossuaire memorial monument at Douaumont near Verdun, where the unidentified bodies of 130,000 soldiers are buried of several nationalities, primarily French and German, following 51 months of war.

Reminds me of some elaborate 3D first-person shooter game, the walls have the colour of Doom. Great!

It's reminiscent of M.C. Escher's work, he was a big fan of stairs, but his were a little more confusing! (his drawing 'Up and Down' springs to mind) The lighting in this shot is just beautiful. Was this how it looked straight out of the camera or did you have to do some work with that much contrast in lighting conditions?
Neil on 9th August 2005 @ 3:57pm
Neil : it was pretty much as it was from the camera - very minor adjustment in curves, it is a very dimly lit place on the way up the stairs, what you see below is people leaning and looking directly into what look like bars, these have small holes for you to look into to see different scenes from the trenches all the way along the bar. Then a display is lit up behind the bar (and out of view) with uniforms, weapons etc.

lovely perspective. I like the grain, personally
mel on 10th August 2005 @ 12:48am
My first thought upon viewing this was that Escher had inspired some video game CGI - great light capture here, and the textures lend themselves well to the high ISO.
