28th July 2005 : Mont Saint Michel 2
Thanks for the warm welcome back. Here is the second shot Im posting of Mont Saint Michel in Northern France. This one as you can see is much closer along the access road than the previous shot. At this distance, there are hundreds of people on the road in the dark, walking back and too, relaxing on the walls, sat out on deck chairs next to camper vans down in the car parks to the right. Everyone is taking in the simply awesome sight.
There were loads of people taking photos, some hand held hoping for the best, some with tripods, some seeing others with tipods ended up resting the cameras on walls.

Reminds me a little of Hogwarts. Must have been incredible to see in person. Love the red glow on the horizon.

I like the two skywards beams coming from the mont. A completely magical place, tuned in to our times...

The gradient of the sky is amazing - very nice shot!
violentrapture on 29th July 2005 @ 2:56pm
Hmmm, does it have the magic of the previous one though?? Put them side by side, I'd go for yesterdays. Still nice.
naz on 29th July 2005 @ 4:13pm
I think, compositionally, yesterday's shot was better (this one's too central for me) but it is really nice to see the detail in this shot and the rich colours in the sky are great. I'm curious, did you take lots of pics at different setting until you got the right one, or was it metered carefully? The balance between subject & sky is spot on.
Neil on 29th July 2005 @ 5:02pm
Neil: I tend to take multiple shots yes, at different exposures, and I usually find I like the darker ones. I use the histogram to check the exposure and alter the exposure time from that.
paul on 29th July 2005 @ 9:42pm
Wow very beautiful.
Raffi on 30th July 2005 @ 3:16am
I feel at peace simply by viewing this photo. It's marvelous. The colors are exquisite, as always, but the glowing from the long exposure is what gives that great warm effect contrasting the cool blue of the sky.
Kristina Medhus on 30th July 2005 @ 6:23am
Paul, how about you post a text with the trip you made so that we too can follow the pilgrim route on our next holiday?
Ioannis on 1st August 2005 @ 3:27pm
haha! I do infact have a list, I may type it up just for a laugh, the only question would be, if people believed it was done in 13 days.....one thing is for sure though, without the kind chappies at TomTom and a ridiculous amount of extra poi points installed on the pda, It would have been a complete nightmare.
paul on 1st August 2005 @ 4:38pm
Haha, yes i remember you do have a load of POI's on that thing, wasn't it mostly take aways that it showed round my area :-)
SteveO on 1st August 2005 @ 5:31pm
superb

amazing lighting on the building to go with the orange on one side and the blue on the other!
aashish on 2nd August 2005 @ 8:52am
Heh Paul, this is what happens if one goes backwards... I only realised just know that you are already back home (I just sent you some comments one the snail picture.. (which is fantastic!!) telling you that I could give you some "insider tipps" if you should drive through Switzerland). Hmm, too late me thinks, since you are already back in the UK. Anyway, looking forward to seeing your skinnyEURObuzzard shots! Cheers
Heidi on 2nd August 2005 @ 8:23pm
In 13 days anything is feasible, now that tomtom tells you about speed cameras ;-)
Ioannis on 2nd August 2005 @ 8:53pm
